Irish Dancing
Mary-Ellen McDonald - TCRG
Arrowtown
My Irish Dancing career commenced in Invercargill many years ago, where I danced for the Telfer school and in later years the O’Hagen school of Irish dance. At the age of 21 I moved to Auckland where I was able to continue my love of dancing and was involved for many years, both dancing and teaching, in the Bredesen School of dance.
Some of the highlights for me during my years of competition were twice winning New Zealand Senior Championship titles, and also being joint winner of the much sought-after Ulster Cup for Senior Jig over 18 years.
I sat my Teachers qualifying exams (TCRG) with the Irish Dancing Commission in 1998 and felt this helped to consolidate all the knowledge gained during my years of learning and performing.
My love of Irish Dancing and the culture has remained with me all these years and, although I am not currently teaching, I always like to keep up with what is happening in the world of Irish dancing.
Having danced in the Southland Competitions when growing up in Invercargill, I am thrilled to be invited to adjudicate the Irish Dancing Section this year, and look forward to seeing the talent in the South.
